The old girl is realy fussy about how far I open up her fuel supply. More than a three quarters a turn and she coughs and spits black smoke, stinkin' up the place. Anything less, and she stumbling. Is this normal? I'm thinking its stuck or logged float. Maybe thers's some crud in the needle and seat. Any thoughts? Kevin

check the float, could be hanging up or sticking. its pretty narrow in the bowl and if its not sitting in there just right it can hang up and over fuel the motor.

It sounds like you are using the fuel valve to control the fuel supply to the carburetor instead of the needle valve.

I would be suspicious of the float, needle valve, main jet obstruction, etc. In general I would get a carb kit and go through that thing carefully, making sure everything is right.

Get a good, complete kit. Not all kits have all the parts and pieces you may need.
