I found a Super A with mower/plow/ disc/fertilizer/planter and cultivators . The tractor looks good for a working tractor and runs good, but it smokes at start-up. Is this going to be a high cost ring job or something I shouldn't worry too much about? He wants $2000 for the tractor and implements. It also has new rear tires. Anyone have an opinion if this is a buy or pass?

thanks

Hydraulics? If yes that sounds like a real good deal. It could smoke on start up for a long long time before you had to worry about it.

It might also clear up if you put in a good high detergent oil. I've had excellent luck running Mobil 1 in old lawnmowers. I think if you don't change the oil often enough the rings gum up. Mobil 1 and running it good and hard seems to free up those stuck rings. I had one old mower that we thought was totally dead. I got it running one last time (jump started from the truck directly to the starter) and switched it to Mobil 1 then commenced to mowing. It just kept running better and better. When I refueled it was still difficult to restart but not anywhere near as bad. After a good hard day mowing I changed the oil again, the next day it started without too much fuss and after that day it ran great and started easy.
We ran it 2 more summers before the transmission finally gave up.

I'd love to find a Super A with some implements...

Better buy it quick before he sees what its worth the extras are almost worth the asking price. You can have new engine kit for 400 minus grinding the crank and you have a new engine.

These decent, straight SAs don't come along everyday here in this part of FL. (South Central)
A lot of plusses in that deal especially with
like new rear tires. If you need it to work with
and have seen it and heard it run, I think you ought to jump on it.
BTW, what part of FL are you in?
