Farmall 460D Rowcrop

Hi guys, I know I have posted this before, but here goes again. It is the strangest thing with the powersteering on F460....I does not want to turn to the right...I can turn it, but it is like I am turning it manually. It turns to the left perfectly with the PS. But no good to the right. If I jack it up in the air ) front end off the ground...it turns easily whether it is running or not....any ideas? What can I try to fix her?
 
Is there play in the front end(bolster) when you jack it up? Go to caseIH parts and look at front end diagrams to see what bearings or gears could be at fault.

Sounds more like a valve issue. I don't know what they use, but there has to be a valve on the input steering shaft (could be inside the front bolster), but the valve is only opening when turning left.
 
It is one of two things. The valve is not centered due to broken or loose parts in valve or the actuating mechanism on the worm mechanism in the bolster is loose or worn out. You need to take the valve off below and determine if the little toggle shift back and forth in both directions the same amount and if not, tear the front apart. If it does work ok then take valve apart. They always have been some what of a pain for centering properly but normally are close enough so no problem. Older style, same mfg like used on trucks were adjustable but these are not. The nut will come loose or washer breaks or bends under that cap. I use air pressure on the bench to tell if centered. Remember though that both L and R turn ports will have flow even in centered positions so you have to decide if one if getting more than the other. I have one that I need to get to work on some fine day for a customer where it leads to the right while driveing and I think I may have to do some machining one end of the spool or the other as I have had it apart before and figured it was good to go but not so. When those tractors were new a few did steer easier one way that the other and of course we could just replace the valve under warranty if necessary. Some slipped through though as they always do.
 
John the first thing to check on 460 560, con the worm shaft move in and out of the housing that holds it. If it can move in and not out it will steer hard one way, if it cam move out and not in it will turn hard the other way.
 
In the order I would troubleshoot it.....remove the plug in the top of the steering sector behind the front grill and in front of the radiator. Important!!!! If there is a leak, it will blast out and the fan will suck it and throw it on the manifold. Suggest you get a hose barb and a bit of hose and run it into a bucket. Also suggest that the engine be cold as hot manifolds and oil do not mix very well.

With the engine running, try to turn right and left. If a large amount of oil is pouring out, you either have piston seals or steering sleeve orings leaking.

Sleeve orings...book calls for 2, you will need 3 as one is used on the "face" of the sleeve and the other two are used in the lower bolster casting (seen here)

The shaft coming out of the steering valve was designed to have the front yoke of the universal joint slide on it to allow fore and aft movement of the valve. Over the years many of these splines have worn out and the yoke has been fastened either with a pin through both parts or a set screw in the yoke. It will work OK when this is done IF you make sure there is enough movement in the steering linkage all the way back to the steering wheel.
