Bought this A stuck, with the head off. When I cleaned the deck, I saw this crack. Didn't notice it before. Its on the left side.
Opinions and advice would be appreciated.

No opinion, I guess.

But now you know why the head was off. Heck, ya knew it needed a motor when ya bought it. :>)

Is there a crack on the side of the block behind the carb?
I was told a crack like in the picture was caused from heat. Don't hold me to that though. My Dad and me have rebuilt several that had crack like that and never had a problem with them.

Shaggy, no I don't see any other cracks even in the classic behind the carb crack. Does not seem like freezing would do just that crack. It had some antifreeze in the block and radiator when I got it. And it had all the signs of rain down the exhaust. Was lightly stuck.
Thanks for the reply.

Charlie

Allen, yeah, you're right. That's just me. Bought a mare one time too that was a cribber. Didn't know it was a stump sucker til I got her home. She worked out alright though. Bought a gelding that was blind in one eye and had a wolf's tooth. He wasn't any good at all until we got that tooth pulled. He worked out alright too. Thanks for the reply.
Best Regards,
Charlie

if its just that little crack it is ok to put it together like that, it wont hurt a thing.

Rustred, thanks that's encouraging. The crank mains are standard and plastigauged to spec and the pistons show little wear, so I might just give it a try. The cylinder head wasn't so good(rusty seats), but I picked up a good one. I'll be sure to let you know how it works out.
Best Regards,
Charlie
