Farmall A stalling at high RPMs.

I have been having trouble with my Farmall A stalling as I increase speed. It will idle fine and run well at low speeds, but as I increase speed it just stalls. It has a Pertronix kit so no points. I did check the fuel flow and it is flowing down to the carb okay. Using the choke seems to help a little.

If it was getting enough fuel it would speed up. When you take out the drain plug in the carb how long does a good steram of gas flow let a quart or more.

I just disconnected the fuel line from the carb and it was a strong flow, not a trickle. I'll try the carb drain tomorrow and see if it is still a good flow there. I did take the carb apart and cleaned it out with Gumout carb cleaner and air.

What would be the best way to check the intake/exhaust manifold gaskets? Spray carb cleaner around there and see if engine RPM increases?

Might want to check or replace the coil. Something similar happened with my H this weekend.
I was out at a plow day working up the soil very nicely with a two bottom plow connected to an aftermarket 3pt even though I had been told it couldn't be done.

The tractor started to sputter at high rpms, acting like maybe the carb float was sticking, later it would quit running when it was warm. Then it wouldn't spark at all.

Mr. Farmall, you could spray around the intake, you could try an un-lit propane torch, you could visually inspect the gaskets. You might try the nuts to see if they are tight to torque. The studs use hardened washers under the nuts on all but the outside studs. If you change the gaskets, make sure the manifold is straight with a straight edge.

I just read online that you are not supposed to mount 12 volt oil filled coils vertically. Of course the one I have has been mounted vertically for a few years so that may be it. I think I will try an epoxy filled coil and see if she runs better.

Crap I meant to say the 12 volt oil filled coils should only be mounted vertically, not horizontally like the stock 6 volt coils.

I had a problem with my A stalling at higher speeds. I found that that it was sediment getting into the fuel lines at at higher speeds. Make sure your filter is clean and that no sediment is getting in to the lines.

While it's running, try to remove the air cleaner oil cup, and see if it has a lot of suction against it. You might have a mud dobber nest in the intake pipe beyond the precleaner. It might be getting enough air to run, but not enough to make any power.(Happened to me!)
