I have a chance to buy my neighbors 656 gas tractor. It is in really good shape, good sheet metal and tires are pretty good. It has a fast hitch with the draw bar. It has a narrow front. Seems to start and run good. He is asking 3,250. What do you guys think of the price? Any help you could tell me about these old 656's would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Thats a good price if its in as good a shape as you say. They are great tractors you will be very happy with it. I have one and i wont part with it.

If The Tractor Vet weighs in he will tell you to run the highest octane gas you can get in it. Listen to him. He knows what he is talking about. Sounds like a fair price for a gas 656 in that condition. Good luck.

Having bought a new 656 gas back in '67 & owned it for several years I'd pass on it. They were a gutless wonder IMO and the shifting mechanism left much to be desired. Ours had a bad tendency to get stuck between gears from the time it was new. Dealer worked on it several tims but it never helped. I had a 450 gas at the same time that would outpull the 656. The 656 did ride & handle better

I would look for a 706 German. Better all around tractor IMO and a decent one could be bought for not much more. Plus the diesel would be a lot more economical to operate than compared to the gas tractor.

It was the first tractor that my dad bought new. It is still going strong to this day. It did all the chopping and picking along with the ground tillage. I would go for it. The only drawback I can see is the narrow front end. I am not a big fan of those.

I gotta agree.

That gasser will eat ya alive in fuel costs and won't pull itself away from it's own shadow.

Might be okay for a loader tho if ya put a wide front under 'er.

I'd sure avoid ANY gas tractor over 50 horsepower.

Our 656 gas has been running 87 octane since the early 1980s, no issue. The topic has been beaten to death several times. The current AKI octane rating of 87 is more than sufficient for a low compression engine like the 263, and is actually higher than the old RON rating recomended when this engine first came out.

If you are going to work it hard you might want to pass, when that old 6 cylinder gets put under load is does burn a lot of fuel - especially compared to the 282 used in the diesels. If you only plan on using it for light duty (haying, chores) its fine, fuel consuption drops off quite a bit. Those engines also tend to start pretty easy in the dead of winter without the need for a block heater.

I had a loader on my 656. With the poor shifting mechanism it made a darn poor loader tractor. The hyds aren't what they should be for a loader tractor either though I did but a bigger pressure relief valve in mine which did help. On the bright side, you won't have to worry about tearing up the loader if it's any kind of loader at all. I had a Freeman 4000XL on mine.
