424 lift problems

Messed with my 424 again yesterday. Still having problems with my 3 point working correctly. I checked the filter under the column - its clean. Did find the top link spring is broken. Messed with the adjustment and its still the same. Tried tricking it too.

Lift works fine cept its weak. Wont lift my back blade unless I rev the snot outta it. The cylinder seal should be good since it doesnt bleed down at all - even after a week of sitting. I even played with the lever for the remote. Nothing changes it. Pump doesnt get hot when its running either.

Bout outta ideas. All thats left is the pressure relief valve and the other filter - which I think would be clean too. The whole system is really clean from what Ive seen.

Anyone idea's on fixing this?

Hi Matt, did you clean the suction filter on the end
of the suction tube(large) in the hydraulic housing
under the seat?
If it has power steering, could be the flow divider
is letting most of hydraulic flow go to PS instead
of splitting off about 3 GPM for PS.

It has power steering, but its a regular power steering pump.

I havent touched that filter yet - thats my next mission. It should still work if it clogged. just really slow is all.

It sounds to me like a weak pump, HOWEVER... If there was EVER anything that a manual was needed to work on, it's that hitch. I have one (AND a manual), so I know what I am talking about as there's LOTS of troubleshooting and setup information and diagrams in that book, including pump and pressure testing.

There's one on ebay right now for $10.00, "International I-424/B-414 Tractor Hitch Service Manual". Auction # 380331412161. (I have NO connection to the auction.) There's another one, as well, for a bit more $.

Hi Matt, does it have PS pump and 3Pt pump coupled
together on front right of engine? There is also a
screen behind one of the big plugs on the front of
the hydraulic housing by the front of the seats.
There are 2 knobs at front of seat, 1 diverts flow
to a remote outlet and the other is push in and
turn 1/2 and it reduces the flow to 3pt to 3 GPM.
If the relief valve is weak, you can usually hear
it chattering.

Doah I just bought the hydraulic manual last nite......

My 424 has one pump on the side of the engine. Far as valves go Ive played with em both and really get nothing besides shutting off the hitch, havent heard any chattering. Hitch doesnt jerk either.

If the relief valve was bad, wouldnt it bleed off when some thing real heavy was on it? I had my rototiller on it and used the backhoe to assist lifting it and it holds fine still.

It sounds like your pump is weak and not putting out enough pressure unless you really rev the engine. Go to Northern tool or some place that has hydaulic parts and get a gage. Find a place to tap into the pressure line (there should be a port for this) and screw in the gage and see what pressure you have. A cheap hydraulic pressure gage won't cost much. Not sure what pressure the pump should make, but I would think at least 1500 psi. The 424 should easily lift a blade. I used to own one and it had no problems lifting large round hay bales and my 6 ft bush hog.
