The tractor was at the Mecum Auction in Walworth, WI. The serial number was 230880. The guy said it was a '49. I'll trust him. He said he had to fix on it and it wasn't perfect, but it is better than not having it at all. Note the mounts and how it used wingnuts to hold the top on.

Here is a view of the entire thing. There are two metal straps that it uses to mount it in the front and rear.

Photo showing how the front strap mounts. It is basically a T that mounts to the front nub on the box.

I had a feeling the piece in the middle on the extended stud was for the battery box and now I know for sure! It was too perfect to be homemade. I'll have to check the toolbox harder for the front piece. I did find the original radiator drain in there.

My dad and grandfather both had 1949 MD's. Dad said when the 12 volt batteries became more common, they took the rear battery box off. The battery box was still up above in the garage long after he traded the MD for a new 400 Farmall. It was still there when the garage burned down in 1968.

Ouch, think of what that would be worth today! I think I would rather leave the one beside the seat and use the one under the tank as a toolbox or something. They are a PITA when you have to charge/jump the tractor.

A lot of guys (even hardcore MD'ers) don't believe in that battery box. I always say it is right in the parts book, how could you say they don't have it!?!
