Step by step Generator and starter rebuild

Im looking for some info on how to rebuild my starter and generator for my Super A. I have bought the complete kits for both and would like to do it myself vs take it to a shop and have it done(stupid I know)but I have alway"s tried to do things the hard way first

I guess what I"m asking for is if anyone knows of or has a step by step pattern I can follow to attempt this myself. I found a really good one on a ww11 army jeep that goes into quite a lot of detail. Its different than a farmall generator though

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you googled "how to"? Have you googled rebuild generator? Have you tried your library for a rebuild manual for generators?
I was 15, had never had one apart, but diassembled the genny off my 40 Ford flathead. Went to the parts store and they showed me what i needed. Cleaned it up, installled new brushes, bushings, lube. Reassembled and good to go. You ought to be able to do it.

I have in my library about 30 manuals and books from the 1950s 60s and 70s. These are easily found in used bookstores and Amazon. The fundamentals are easy. Take pictures and notes.
Remove through bolts. Take off end plates Get new brushes bushings and or ball bearings as needed (usually)
Make sure no wiring touches the frame or end plate.
(one brush will be!!connected on purpose to the end plate.)
Put a new style drive pinion on the starter.
If they worked before rebuild, test no further.
Clean up the commutator if it is scored with strip abrasive cloth250 then 400 grit, round and round, not longways on the segments.
Look at the books to find out about undercutting the segments on some. Jim

I am in the same boat. Make sure you get the correct brushes. I made the mistake of getting a starter "rebuild kit" from an ebay seller, and the brushes were not correct.

My recommendation is that you go to a local starter/alternator repair shop and get the correct brushes/springs/bushings. Also while you are there, have the shop turn down the commutator on your armature on their lathe.

The local shop is going to be your best source of information. They will be able to tell you if your coils/shoes are grounded (bad), condition of the terminal stud and condition of your armature.

I went through all of the above learning the hard way...
