Did IH ever make a H tractor with a diesel engine?

I had a guy tell me today at lunch about a farmall H with a direct injection diesel engine in it. he said it came that way from the factory. Is this true?
Thanks Ed

there was a british built m with a direct start diesel, also a farmall cub produced in france that had a diesel in it, so it is possible that an h was produced over seas with a diesel.

Also a C or Super C diesel in France... there were pictures of one a short time back on this forum. An H diesel would not have been US made, but [u:9f561225de]maybe[/u:9f561225de] UK or French.

Just tell him if he knows where one is you would like to see it and so would thousands of other people NO they did not make one. Where does all these bull shi// stories come from.

gene, i dont know about an h, but there was the bdm produced in britian, and a while back somebody had posted pics of a cub in france that was diesel.

This might cause some confusion.

Here is the story- the guy I had lunch with knows a guy that looked at some equipment, he said the owner quit farming and put everything in van bodies years ago. the owner said he was the second owner and he knew the guy that bought it new. and it has always been diesel.
so "stand by" I get to the bottom of this. he is going back with a flashlight to look again. It's probably a M or something.

The Wikipedia entry for Farmall addresses this: "A few clever mechanics have created "homebrew" IH models, the so-called Super H-TA (Super H with Torque Amplifier), Super HD (Super H Diesel), and F-16 tractors. However, IH itself never manufactured such models."

In the Guy Fay book there is an M with a Shepard diesel conversion..Which might have been used in the H?????

The closest would be a 350 Diesel...used a Continental engine.
The British Diesel was a BMD. Pretty much the same as US-made MD, except they omitted the Gas starting equipment.

There were no model H tractors built at any of the English I H plants, only the model M, later badged as BM, and BMD for the Diesel, also a model BW6, and BWD6 were produced, the old model M/W6 rear end soldered on right into the 1970s in the 634 tractor. BUT Perkins engines of Peterbough did market a conversion pack to fit their P3 Diesel into the model H, one or two of these will be seen at vintage rallys in England, but not many.

I have a few books on IH tractors, IH did not build a deisel H model tractor. If someone says they have seen one it is a hobby shop special--NOT ORIGINAL.

I have seen an H with the P3 engine. Also a few Allis model B and Fergusons ( of course! ) the weirdest thing I saw was a Standard Fordson with a Perkins L4,( The same engine that was used in the MH 745 tractor and The Claas SF combine.) I doubt that was Perkins"s own conversion kit?

Years ago I was working for a Claas dealer in the fens, they were also Perkins agents, they had converted 144 Fergies to P3!, the Service manager who was a lad at the time had written a tally on the workshop wall with the words 'ONE GROSS' under the total. When we cleared out the old parts dept there were still 3 brand new Perkins grill badges stuffed under a shelf with a heap of J.A.P engine parts, I got one of them and pop rivited it to my toolbox.

Hi Richard and Roy, you are both correct Perkins offerd a P3 convertion for the Farmall H tractor. They also offerd the L4 diesel as a convertion for the Farmall M tractors. MJ

Hi you might have solved a mystery for me! I have a photo in a book (somewhere! ) of a IH tractor refered to as a BMD but the engine is obviously a Perkins! Maybe it is a Perkins conversion on a Farmall M ? I will hunt for the picture, if I find it I will scan it and put it on here.
The Only IH tractor I know of with a factory fitted Perkins was the 475, ( Perkins A4.212)which was built as a replacement for the 'lifeless' 474 with the D206. Unless you know of any others?

Hi MJ
This is the one I meant. It is Badged as a BMD but to me it looks like Farmall M with a Perkins conversion maybe? It looks like a Perkins L4 to me.
The BMD was factory fitted with a IH 264 I believe.

Hi Roy, I know of 2 BM tractors with Perkins L4 convertions, they both came to the IH feature that i put together at the 2009 Newark tractor show. MJ

The uncanny thing about that is the Perkins P3 engine was 144 cubic inches.
I remember The first time that I ever baled silage with a John Deere 550 baler, after I had finished the field I looked at the bale counter to see how many bales there were. Exactly 550 !

"old model M/W6 rear end soldered on right into the 1970s in the 634 tractor."

and the H rear was used through the 686 in the usa. (with some improvements of course!)

Was the 634 literally the same parts, or had it been updated over time similar to the usa models?

Yes from that side it looks a lot like a 4.270 engine as fitted to a Claas Matador Combine which I believe was a 'newer' version of the L4 ( Rotary fuel pump instead of inline pump etc. )

Hey Gene,

That "friend of a friend says" stuff always ends up full of it. But it would be a good time for that guy to get an appointment with an optometrist!

Reminds me of an old guy who once told me a story like this....and then he said "But you can add what you want".

LA in WI

Yes called the BMD and later the Super BMD . They used the same engine ( BD 264 ) in the later B.450. They were wonderful lugging engines but crap starters! ( Been there done that ).

a few years ago a guy had a write up in the paper i think he was near glenwood city WI was putting 4 cylinder mercedes diesels out of cars in h farmalls

What do you think of this photo??? Perkins. Looks nice.[/img]
