IH 444 hours?

Hello:
What kinds of hours can these BD-154 engines take before needing a rebuild? I'm not very familiar with IH, but this diesel looks like it might be handy around here. The hourmeter doesn't work (at 2200), and I called the previous owner to learn in the 7 years he had it, the hourmeter never worked - he put on about 2100 hours. Are parts tough to find?
Any input appreciated.

Since you don't REALLY know how many hours are on it, much less if someone has been "into" it before the whole thing is pointless and moot!

Hi Jason, we bought a B-414D with BD-154 new in 1962 and the hour meter rolled over at 10,000 hrs. We traded it in 1973 with about another 2,500 Hrs on it and it was still running strong and not using oil with a little blowby. We also had 434 and 384 with BD-154, all good tractors and reliable engine. Maintenance schedules were always followed. The only downside of BD-154 is glow plug starting. Require block heater for the winter.

Put it to work for a trial period (at least 5 hours or better yet 2 days of real work on tillage or auger etc. If it uses dramatic oil, or smokes, or has serious blow by after it is worked for several hours, blue exhaust smoke, or uses coolant, it is toast. Not knowing the hours is just going to be a risk. good running engines will probably serve for a good long time. If it is a good financial deal, do the trial, then if it seems fine, buy it. Jim
