Head for SMDTA

I have a SMDTA that starts & runs good, however, the cylinder head has a crack that leaks water. I have tried all sorts of things like JB Weld, etc. to stop this leak, but nothing has worked yet. I"ve decided that I will probably have to find another head. I wonder if the head from a MD, SMD, 400, or 450 will work on my tractor? Has anyone had any experience with this? Does anyone have a useable head or know where a head can be located and what is a reasonable price for one? Thanks.

It can be fixed, but not with JB weld. I would only use that as a paperweight. Or maybe I could form it into a ball, shove a penny into it and attatch it to a metal chain. I never figured out what purpose that served, but all of the parts stores around here have done it. Maybe they use it for lottery tickets.
But I digress, any competent machine shop could weld or weld and pin it you will be good to go. Yes, I think MD and SMD heads will work. I know the injectors and precups were different for 450s maybe 400s so they might not work by themselvew. I think you are better off to at least try a real fix of your head.

sflem849 and gene bender are on the right track. Most cylinder heads can be fixed depending on where the crack is located. The two most common methods are either having the head pinned or welded, but again that depends on where the crack is. There are some that just can't be fixed. Id start by contacting a local machine shop and getting their opinion.

Good luck!

I would use Pakes in Janesville, WI if I were Billy or me ;)
