injector pump oil level

I was doing maintenance on a 400D I just got. When I opened the
injection oil level cock, diesel came out? I drained about a cup of
diesel out of it and it was still coming out.
It should have 1/2 pint of 30W oil in it.
The tractor runs good and has good fuel oil pressure.

Has anyone seen this and is it a problem?
Thanks for any help. BW

that's how our 450D is. Like you said it seems to run fine. Was told this is a common problem on these. Haven't done any work on the tractor yet so idk what causes it or how to fix it. Hopefully someone here can give some info.

primary pump seal is probably leaking. shutting the fuel off after shutdown helps. running it with diesel in it WILL eventually wreck it. if it's a B pump you can still get the seal from CIH. if it's an A or pre-A pump it's sealed with a packing gland so you'll have to buy some packing rope and reseal it that way.

I just talked to an old time IH mechanic about my Injector pump in my 450. I don't remember what exactly he said typically goes to leaking, but if it runs good and you can live with changing the oil, just do that. Assuming that it's not filling the thing up in a few hours. I guess the question is how many hours of operation does it take to notice it "making oil" ? These pumps are getting quite expensive to rebuild. His own 600 leaks some... Only noticeable if you run it all day long. That's just what he told me.

pretty well most of the ones i have seen are that way. i just drain out the diesel and fill them up with engine oil. drain them down as required and change the oil again when it appears thinned by the diesel.it would need the front seals replaced in the primary pump to fix the leak.
