Cub head bolt sealant

I'm getting ready to put the head back on after valve job and rings. The factory ISS-1039 manual and I&T manual don't spec any sealant for the bolt threads. An old IH dealer mechanic told me to use teflon tape. I was thinking #2 Permatex. What are some other opinions from Cub mechanics?
 
Putting ANY kind of "dope" on the threads of a head bolt will affect the ability to keep the torque constant. Are you REALLY worried about the head bolts backing out? Never seen it happen on a Cub in my 40+ years of wrenching. If that thought bothers you, you might try some LocTite...but be prepared for a cussing from the NEXT guy who has to remove the head.

The ONLY engine I ever saw that required any sealant on a head bolt was the '66-up AMC V8's, which had ONE head bolt that passed through a coolant passage, and required #2 Permatex. Since a Cub doesn't have that occurring, I have NO IDEA why you'd want ANY sealant on the threads. Because a properly torqued head, with no cracks and a flat surface, sealed with a quality head gasket to a flat block deck surface with no cracks, simply IS NOT going to leak.
 
Maybe I have a different Cub then as all but 2 of the bolts go into coolant passages, and the 2 that don't go through to an intake port.
 
Cub head bolts are threaded into the coolant passages and should be sealed, it doesn't take much sealant just a little on the threads.Some have even used Coppercoaton the bolts the same as on the head gasket.
 
You need a sealant of some type on the head bolt threads. Permatex would work just fine. I use Copperkote because I use it on the head gasket.

Maybe you should go look at a cub head and see where the bolts go.
