Geez - I'm losing it. I read the topic line as "tractor spitting sand," wondering how the he!! could it do that.

I made mine with 4" angle iron I had laying around. I drilled a series of holes for different tractors to mount to the clutch housing. I then welded on a piece of flat steel with heavy duty casters bolted to them. Works great and having the ability to roll it out of the way is handy.

JMP,

I have designed and manufactured a stand for splitting tractors for like doing clutch jobs or replaceing rear seals and the like. The stand bolts to the frame rails of the engine. I also have made a stand that bolts to the rear transmission housing that holds up the rear of the tractor. If I could help you my e-mail is open. Charlie

I feel like a shade tree mechanic for using harbor freight jack stands and a section of lumber. I thought everyone used jack stands....

What do these tractor splitting stand allow? Can you move the tractor with?

i know everyone does not have an i beam in there garage but i used cribbing to support the mid section of the tractor. useing a beam trolly i removed the bolster then the motor. it worked out pretty good.

I never have used splitting stand of any sort. I use over head hoists and simple cribbing blocks. I have done many a tractor that way. Block it up under the tranny and with over head hoists hoist the parts up and out of the way. Ya I know every body does not have that option and me I just keep improving what I have and as of this summer I have 4 over head hoists on a 20 foot I beam very nice

I have also always used a chain hoist on an I-Beam for the rear half and made angle iron stands to hold the front half. Get it all set, un-bolt and roll the rear half away.

My buddy built me/himself some stands. They are sleeving 2" sq on the sides with plates to bolt to the frame on top. Then there is sleeving 2" sq on the bottom to hold the legs apart. They are on rollers with acme thread to adjust the height.
The cheapest stands I have seen go for about $400. They are not worth it from what I have seen.

They allow you to move sections of the tractor apart easily when splitting a tractor. They also provide stability so your tractor sections won't fall over and they make it easier when mating the tractor sections back together. Hal

your stands seem like they would be very usefull and much safter than using blocking could you either post some pictures or e-mail them to me? is there any other shop equipment that you have for others to look at and purchase

(quoted from post at 16:54:06 01/21/11) i don't remember the price.

I thought they were pretty expensive when I checked. IIRC $400+ The other thing I don't like is how the front half doesn't have rollers, but the rear does. I would really like rollers on both, but mine only has them on the front right now. The front is a lot easier to weasel around to get lined up with the clutch than the back.

The stands that I have designed have wheels on both the front and rear units. I have not mastered the process of posting pictures but I can send them by e-mail. My e-mail is open, charlie

Just upload them and then paste the url (fancy internet code for where the pic is) to this page. Highlight and then click Img

In the new style you can just upload it right from advanced posting.

Charlie, what is your email, I would like to see some pictures of what you have created.

I am looking to make something to split my Farmall AV but need some ideas on where to bolt to and where or how the front would be supported?

Here's a pic of my homemade stands being used on a Farmall H.

My borrowed stands are VERY similar to Rustyfarmall's, except mine have casters on the front stand as well.

Do you/can you split the tractor just like that with the engine in it?

Supposedly, Yes. I haven't yet tried it. The H in the picture was one of two that were being turned into ONE good tractor, and because of some issues with the front bolster on one of them, it wasn't as easy as just joining the front half with a good engine to the back half with a good trans/rear-end.

I have my MD apart right now and it is a little scary how much the engine sags. All the people I talk to say that is the way to do it. I took the big bolts that bolt the halves together and put them through the rear support plate to help take the stress off the front of the motor. I am just not sure how everything will go back together with the pieces at different angles. Give me another month and I should have your answer!

I am kind of thinking that my front stand needs something added to it that will help support the rear of the engine. Some sort of cradle affair that will fit the rear of the oil pan.

That would work out pretty well. It probably isn't vital, but it can't hurt and it will keep things lined up a little better. When my buddy built his they were built for some big Ford tractor, but they were designed to be used on all tractors. If you had the engine support it might be a little more Farmall specific.

One of these days it will be warm enough out in the shop to start tinkering again. I'm already conjuring up mental images of what the finished product should look like.
