mta starter id

was wondering if anyone would know the number of teeth are on a gas mta .....we have pulled a three bolt starter off .....only numbers are 5811....starter drive has 10 teeth....we got one from a dealer but it has 12 teeth.....old one was only 4 yrs old and was chewed up real bad...put the new12 tooth one in and gave it a shot....seemed to turn over fine...and dis engage fine also......so should we go with the new 12 tooth drive......thanks for any insite

All I can tell you is my parts book lists same starter drive for M from 1940 up thru Super M and 6 volt 400 as being the same #. Don't know the tooth count.

Starter # 1108012 for MTA used 10 teeth. Original type starter has a saddle mount switch on top, lever and pull rod activated. Only starter I can think of a the moment that would use 12 teeth and bolt up and work, would have a electric activated starter switch on it. Unless someone is now making a 12 tooth starter drive that will work in a SMTA starter.

(quoted from post at 07:48:33 01/20/11) The site below (I found using google) shows the new style 10 tooth drive. I do not know if a 12 tooth drive will eventually tear up the ring gear. Jim

Are you sure it would tear it up? As long as the angle was right (by making a larger bendix) it should be ok.

Gears have a pitch diameter that drives the center to center spacing. A gear with 12 teeth must match that pitch spacing, or be wrong. If it had wierd thin teeth it could work, but I cannot imagine it being correct. The starter drive would need to be raised off of the centerline of the mounting hole to allow the correct diametral pitch and pressure angle teeth to be correct with 12 teeth. Jim

That's the part I didn't think of.

One type of LP starter for farmall 350 and 450 used a 12 tooth drive, the 450 center housing that starter bolts to is the same as SMTA. Starter is used on the large tractors with same starter ring gear as the 10 tooth. When used on a 350 the ring gear was different for that starter.
