wd9 rearend bearings

hello
I have a bearing out in the rear end of my super wd9 and was wondering how hard it would be to change. I have never been into one of these and have no idea what to expect. I know its out because i can move the axle side to side about 2 inches. Has anybody had this happen to them before? How hard is it to get to and can i get a new bearing to replace it? I also have been wanting to change the rear tires from the optional big size( i dont remember the numbers) to a 14.9-34. I know i will have to change the hubs but i will have to pull the one side to replace the bearing anyway. I was told this is nearly impossible. Does anybody have any suggestions? thanks

ethan, here is a diagram of what is inside there. i have the i-h parts book for the 9 series with the part numbers. Wardner knows his way around the 9's, give him a shout and he can give you advice. if you need part numbers shoot me an e mail and i can scan some of the pages in the manual and email ya. happy new year!!!! glenn

Is it possible the bolt holding the bull gear is loose? Or has fallen out?

You can go in thru the pto shaft location and retighten the bull gear bolt.

You have to remove the wheel, spacer, and bolt-on bearing retainer. But that is only the beginning because the inner bearing will also have to be replaced. I include the inner bearing because it is now junk. That requires reaching inside the PTO opening and separating the bolt and bull gear from the axle inner end. The axle should come out easily. You are lucky the inner bearing didn't disintegrate and trash the axle housing.

You are likely to have problems with the splined wheel. It may have to be pressed off the axle in a large press.

I'd do both sides as long as you are replacing both wheels.
