white scum at oil fill

Hello,Need your thoughts! f-400 gas engine totally rebuilt by my machine shop. Running engine short periods while restoring tractor. Had it running 3/4 throttle about 1 hr.noticed condensation drips from breather tube. spun oil fill cap off and saw quite a bit of white scum built up around screen. pulled dip stick oil appears very clean no sign of milky. My question ; do you think its condensation or do I have a water leak somewhere? T.I.A. Tony

If no milky oil in the crank case, its probobly just condensation. I noticed on my cub I get a lot of condensation around the breather cap and really not sure why or how it happens. keep in eye on the crankcase oil and if it gets milky you may need a new head gasket, or check for a crack somewhwere. I know the cub has 0 pressure on the cooling system, not sure about the other models. Good luck, hope its not anything major.

It's usually recommended to retorque the head bolts after running it a while.

but yes it is also recommended to re torque the heads and you should also check your valves while your in there esp. if they put new valves or seats in

Redgems, sounds like condensation to me. One of the hardest things on an engine is short runs that don't totally bring it up to operating temp.

While I don't think that anything is amiss here, I would certainly run this puppy up to temp and keep her there for at least 30 mins. Condensation in the crankcase is NOT uncommon for tractors that don't get a regular workout. Not sure if you have some work for it to do, but I would certainly work it a bit, easy at first to run the rings and cam in, then REALLY put her to work. See if you condensation goes away.

comments on the re-tourque of the head are appropriate which of course also require checking/setting the valve lash. However, check with the machine shop that did your work to see what kind of head gasket was used. some require re-tourque, some don't. guessing is NOT the way to go here...................

dont matter if new valves or seats or old, anytime head is retorqued valve lash is decreased which requires resetting valves as a result of head gskt is being squished more. pushrods dont squish so result is rocker moving closer to valve stem decreasing clearance.

Cover the grill/radiator to get the engine up to normal temp. The engine pulls in a lot of cold air when running.
A new original style thermostat will be a big help also.
