OIL ON SURFACE IN RADIATOR

I DID MY ANNUAL ANTIFREEZE CHECK ON ALL MY TRACTORS A WEEK AGO. MY MOST RECENT PURCHASE, 1936 F12 HAD A FAIRLY THICK FILM OF OIL ON THE SURFACE. WHY? WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR? COULD IT BE A BAD HEAD GASKET?

Oil leaking into the coolant is most often a head gasket. Also the least difficult and expensive issue. Internal passages can crack, but are less likely to do so. (I believe this applies to your tractor. Some early IHC had hand oiled valve train if I remember correctly) Jim

I am with Jim on this one. Most likely a head gasket. The bigger question is, do you have coolant in the crankcase. both liquids in the wrong place is NOT a good sign. coolant in the oil is either a failed head gasket, sleeve "O" ring, or cracked block/head. Mostly the first.

Oil in the cooland is usually a head gasket, however, it can also be a crack in the block or head.

If you take the head off, if it is the gasket, you will see where it is leaking.
