F-30 axle nut question

The axle nut on the F-30 is 3 3/8 hex. I have been looking for either a 6 or 12 pt socket, and have found none. I do have a large monkey wrench that will fit.

Does anyone know where I can find a socket for this? I have found 8 pt at 3 3/8, but no 6 or 12.

The monkey wrench is worn and loose, so I am worried about getting the nuts off. Loading the bearings should be ok, but breaking them free, I am concerned..........

PS I am considering a pipe wrench and use steel shims to protect the nut from the jaws. I guess I could also use a 3 1/2 socket, and shim 2 sides.

thoughts? I would be using trimmed starter shims as the material for shimming.

I bought a 3 1/2 inch axle nut wrench for about 20 bucks that works fine. All the axle nuts and flywheel nut i checked measured 3 1/2 inch.

I"ll bet your local Case/IH dealer can steer you in the right direction. I"m guessing they have to deal with that size nut.

NAPA has individual 6-point sockets of that size - 3/4 inch drive. I purchased a 3 1/2 inch for my W-30 & 10-20.
I suggest that you take 1 nut off with a cold-chisel and take it to a NAPA store to make sure you get the right size -- they are about $30 each.

sorry meant to say socket not wrench. Its an OTC 1910 3 1/2 inch 3/4 drive axle/hub nut socket. I paid between 20 and 30 bucks for it.Should be able to get through many sources.

Tom, Do you know a guy near by that works on heavy equipment. He proble has a socket he might lend or rent you. oldiron29

thanks guys. I called OTC directly, and they do not make a 3 3/8 6pt socket.

cowman, I agree and like your idea.

Old, I like next to a trucking company, and I stopped over and talked to their mechanic. No go.

I am thinking I will try the monkey wrench first to see if I can break them free with a little heat and penetrating oil. if not, next will be the 3 1/2 socket with shims. If thay doesn't produce results, I'll weld one up.

I appreciate all the responses.

I have made a few of my own sockets to fit large nuts. One was for the front crankshaft nut when I rebuilt my Farmall 400, and two for the large nuts on either end of a Farmall F20 crankshaft.

Since you already have a 3 1/2" socket, just shim three sides with small pieces of 1/8" flat iron.
