Farmall C transmission

I rebuilt the engine on my C a while back, runs like a top, but now I"m having issue with the transmission.

First and second gear are great, but I"m finding it tougher and tougher to get it into 3rd or 4th gear. they work great if I can shift it into gear but it"s getting to where when I slide the shifter over to the right to find em, they just aren"t there, you can"t feel and slots over there to shift up or down into if that makes sense.

I"m planning on breaking the old gal open at some point in the future and likely replacing clutch, brakes, axle seals and whatnot but I would like to put that off for a while yet.

Any good notions on what is with the shifting, or what damage might be done using it in first and second until I have time to break it open and work on her back end? Maybe something I can fix without breaking her open like shifting forks going out?

Pulling the cover off is pretty easy. It will prvide a clear view of the issue. I imagine the shift rail is rusty and making it hard to shift. Cleaning it up with 250 grit paper, and solvent like PB Blaster, then lubing it with trans oil will make it fine. It could be gears having difficulty sliding on the shafts, but less likely. Using a thin bead of silicon sealer for a gasket is OK and works well. Jim

Hello Janicholson: On the H & M series it's often suggested to pull out the shifter and build it up by welding and grinding to original shape to improve shifting. Any benifit to pulling the shifter on his Farmall C.? Thanks.. ag

It could be an issue, but the symptoms are indicative not of two gears at once, or misplaced tip in the rails, but a rail that is not moving.
Wear does occur on these, but I think it is a different issue in this case. Jim

Yup, it shifts very easy into first, second an reverse, and the sifter slides horizontally over to where third and fourth should be easily, there just seems to be no third or fourth slots to shift vertically into.

Screams shifting rails or forks or some such to me, as when it did go in both those gears worked fine. But I have never had it open so don't know what in there yet.

As well I very very rarely use third or fourth, mainly first and second.. Was just worrying about using it at all until I figured out what the issue is and I'm 250mi. away from it as it is down by my land at my sisters place.

I couldn't remember if the trans top even came off, if it does I'll open it up and take a look next time.
