2424 - What Size Front Tires?

Will need to replace the fronts on my 2424 soon. It has 6.00 X 16 tires now. How much bigger tire can I put on it? Was driving my neighbor's JD 2020 and noticed he had 7.50 X 16's on it. I like the way it looked, although that may be too big for my tractor.

It looks like my rims are dished a bit. If I got with a wider and taller tire and have clearance problems with the spindle, can I flip the rims and get a slightly wider footprint?

Thanks!

Tim

You can turn the rims around to get more clearance but the tractor will suffer for it. It causes harder steering and can lead to broken spindles.

If you follow the center line of the spindle down to the ground you will find that it meets the ground about the middle of where the tire contacts the ground. That allows the wheel to pivot on that spot when the wheels are turned. If you reverse the rims the center line of the spindle will not be in the center of the tire. When the wheels are turned they can no longer just pivot but must also roll. This increases the effort needed to steer.

Also by moving the wheels out away from the center line it changes the forces on the wheel bearings. As originally designed most of the load is carried on the larger inside bearing. With the wheel moved out the load moves more to the smaller, outside bearing. This makes the horizontal part of the spindle act like a lever and greatly increases the forces on the angle of the spindle. This can lead to spindles breaking at the inner end of the large bearing.
