12 volt generator

Delco generators of 12v ratings were common on mid 60 Farmalls. They just need a VR and a 12v coil, bubs, battery, and you are all set, the starters can handle it easily. You could have your gen modified to be 12v as well (More costly though).
They even make an alternator inside a generator shell! Jim

(quoted from post at 18:43:45 11/22/10) I want to convert my farmall m to 12 volt but use a generator in stead of and altinator . Any suggestions.

I use a Bsoch solid state generator regulator with my 6 Volt generator.
The output at the battery is 14.0 Volts. They cost about $29.

WSJ,
So for my 6v 300U if I buy the Bosch VR you mentioned and a 12v Battery that's it? A 12v coil? Did you switch to neg gnd for the new VR?
Please keep it simple, I am not interested in theory, just a list of the items I need to purchase.
Thanks,
Dell

I have two 6v generators, of a '49 M & a '53 SM, that have been converted to 12v neg. grd. Both were done by an automotive electric repair shop. First one (SM's) didn't cost me anything to have done & only took the guy about 5 minutes. 2nd one he charged $35 as it needed some new parts.

I have a SMTA that has a 12v single wire alternator & I prefer the generator conversion. I'm no "correct police" but IMO the generator looks better & I didn't have to make a bracket or find a different belt like I did for the alt.

Also, th alt is always "excited" so unless I start the tractor at least once a week, which I don't, it always has a dead battery when I go to start it.

That's right, get a 12 Volt coil, 12 Volt lights and swap the wires on your amp meter. Don't forget to polarize your generator after you install the 12 Volt battery with the neg. ground. Post some pics after you have it installed.

[u:8efc55d7cb][b:8efc55d7cb]DANGER: YOU MUST INSTALL THE BATTERY USING NEG. GND WITH THE BOSCH SOLID STATE REGULATOR.[/b:8efc55d7cb][/u:8efc55d7cb]

WSJ,
Seems like I should swap around the + & - coil wires too. Or does that take care of itself through the VR.
Thanks,
Dell

That's a step you could add to the list.
