B-414 PTO driven shaft cap (plug) removal

I am renovating a B-414 with a dual plate clutch and constant running PTO. I need to separate the clutch housing from the transmission housing. According to the workshop manual an initial step is 'remove the plug and "O" ring from clutch housing at front of PTO shaft'. So far the plug has resisted all my attempts to remove it. Does anyone have previous experience which might assist me?

Yes they are tight, I have removed the with a pair of blacksmiths tongs in the past. Take the bottom tin plate off and get the largest pair of water pump pliers to it and hope it comes. MJ

Thank you for your response. Access is pretty good as I have already split the engine from the bell housing. I can get a pair of stilsons on the cap and it will turn, but the casting into which it appears to fit also turns! Am I right in thinking that the cap (plug) to be removed is just what appears to be a 2" diameter x 1/4" thick cap? Is it a friction fit, i.e. was it simply hammered in? I appreciate your assistance.

Hello MJ
Forget the above, mission accomplished. The workshop manual instructions are in fact in the wrong order in that the snap ring must be removed as an initial step and not after removing the plug!
Thanks again for your help
