Power steering hydraulics

I have a CharLynn PS unit I plan to install on my loader tractor- an early M-- and powering it from the PTO pump that runs my front end loader. Will I have to have some type of limiter between the pump and the PS unit? I have a full time PS pump that sits behind the magneto, but am afraid to use it for fear of damaging the camshaft gear. Thanks for any opinions or advice.

running it from the pto wont be live, every time you push the clutch in , you will loose ps. if you do you will need a ps priority flow valve, so ps has priority over the loader. oem tractor sells them, surplus center is another source. if you have a live pump mounted on the distributor, you can use that to drive the torque generator for the ps. is the distributor mounted pump a behlen?

glennster: I am aware that I won't have full time PS, but with 75 year old arms, any is better than none. The magneto drive pump is stamped IH. Thanks for the input.

The Charlynn doesn't use much volume. I think it may be around 3-4 gpm. The distributer hydraulic pump will put out 10-15 gpm. Use a flow control valve from the Surplus Center to bleed off the excess flow. There are fixed and adjustable flow control valves. When you dump more than half the output of the pump back to the reservoir, the load on the gear train is proportionately reduced and is tolerable.

Continue to run the loader with the PTO pump if you wish. Personally, I would make the loader hydraulics live with a pump driven from the crankshaft pulley as shown below.

having used cam- mag driven pumps (one dc case has 2 in tandem-one for power steering one for live loader) I have never had any drive problems. I recall over 20 years ago an older neighbor with loader onCC case about cried after I explaned how the main hyd (also cam driven) from an old selfpropelled case combine setting in the fence row would have given him live hyd many years ago. His hot shot nephew told him it could not be done becaus CC had base mount mag. I explained that all that was necessary wes to switch entire housing from cam gear on back from DC to CC.

i dont think you will have to worry about busting a cam gear with only power steering running of that mag pump. i run power steering a loader with tilt cylinders plus remotes off my 49 "h" with no problems i have two sets of weights and plum full of water plus antifreeze in the back tires i pick up full size pick-up trucks and cars load them on trailers for scrap i did fold up a front wheel one time from overloading with a one ton plus a bed full of junk cant imagine why

curious, what hydraulics are using the live cam driven hydraulic pump. If you don't have anything attached to live hydraulic pump, use that to power your power steering. If you are using it for other attachments put in a flow adjustable flow divider. That is what "Allan in NE" used on his H loader tractor. The adjustable flow divider has 3 port
1. input
2. CF--Control flow
3. EX--excess flow.
I hooked my power steering to the CF port and FEL to the EX port. And adjusted it to where everything worked satisfactory.

Maybe Allan will post pic of how he did his H

These valves are called "priority flow divider valves". This is so the "priority" is the last to be lost due to engine (or pump) RPM. Say the pump is capable of 10 GPM and the PFDV priority is 4 gpm, you can idle the engine down and still not loose flow out the priority port. You may loose flow to the "secondary", but as long as there is flow at all, you will have it where it is most important, or the steering plumbed to the priority.
these valves are not expensive... I have seen them at TSC, but don't recall the price. As long as your requirements for your secondary flow are not a problem, it's the simplest and easiest way to go.
I have one on my 240U which does not have a very large timing gear pump and I do loose flow to the rest of my system (3 point) when I idle down... my loader is on a "live" pump off the crankshaft. From about 1/3 throttle and higher, I am okay on my secondary.
Another option is to go to a junk yard and get a PS pump of a vehicle. Most of the time the Charlynn units used a Saginaw (GM) PS pump. Then there is never any worry about having your power steering.
