HELP - Cleaning/Polishing Metal Farmall Letters & Number

Anyone out there ever re-used their old emblems off the hood of a Farmall tractor with the "chrome" metal emblems. The mid-fifties tractors had them like the 100, 200, 130, 230, 350, etc. The emblems read "McCormick", "Farmall", and "100" on both sides.

Thanks to everyone that helped me get them taken off the hood off my Farmall 100. The method you told me worked absolutely great! Now that I have them off the hood, and the hood is now painted; I'd like to clean them up and polish them before putting them back on.

What is the best way to fix them so they look like new. Should I re-coat them or re-paint them?

I"ve never seen an original pair that had any chrome chipped off or damaged enough to worry about it but saying that if you were inclined to it would probably be better to get them re-chromed. or better yet you can go get some chrome polisher with a buffer wheel and shine them up. if you wanted to paint them i would scuff them up a little and then paint them so the paint would stick. I wouldn"t recommend that though. I"m sure that the chrome paint would come right off in a year or two. I would go with the polisher and if you need to rebend them just bend it slowly with your hand. Thats what I did. Hope i was of some help

Have you looked at the prices of aftermarket emblems? Have you looked at the quality of the aftermarket emblems?

Prices are crazy, and they never look as good or fit as well as the originals.

Nobody throws good originals away because they're not shiny enough.

IIRC, originals are stainless steel, not chromed. They can be polished out, though you will probably have to do it with a dremel tool to get into all the crevices.

Google polishing stainless steel for procedures.

Good advice. Do NOT replace original emblems. Stainless has a tendency to dull with time but polishes up to a high shine if done right. As a rule I do not replace anything original on my tractors if I can possibly fix it. Never been truer than it is today....they just don't make things like they used to.

Thanks for all of the help guys. Now that I know they are stainless steel, I am going to Google polishing them. I have a brand new Dremel thats never been opened, and will use it to do the job.

We just completed a 300 and used a parts store crome polish on emblems with little success. My friend brought by some 'Mothers' mag & aluminum polish { he uses this on this airplane ] it worked great. Put a light coat on and rub it off and 50 years of tarnish came. This stuff is Great ! Hope this helps
