International 444 PTO problems?

I have an international 444 that has been given to me, got it cranked and running perfect, lift is working after changing fluids. Pto will engage but when any pressure is put on it kicks out and will not reengage? I was told there was a sheer pin somewhere that would cause this but cant figure out where it is, or how it would still be able to turn. Does anybody have a breakdown of this system so i can repair? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Michael, check the PTO engagement lever, I have seen them bent so that the PTO collar mechanism does not completely engage. This happens for two reasons, first the dual stage clutch is out of adjustment and is not completely releasing the PTO drive, second, Operator does not realize tractor has dual stage clutch, 1/2 down stops transmission and all the way to floor board stops PTO and transmission. The Operator will attempt to force the PTO into gear without pushing clutch to the floor.

If the pin is sheared the PTO is usually engaged or disengaged and PTO lever has no effect. But pin could also be bent.

The PTO engagement lever and control rod with pin can be removed by removing the 3 studs around where the control rod goes into transmission case.
You may want to park tractor on a slope with the PTO lever on the high side so transmission oil does not leak while removing PTO lever and control rod.
