Stanadyne 656 questions

Recap: 656 Hydro sat for 6 months while fuel drained out small hole in primary filter. Replaced filter canister and have fuel at top of filters and at return line.Fires only once or twice on ether.
Have hooked 2 12 volt batteries for extra spin. Still no fuel to injectors. Is hydro so we can"t pull it. Has fuel to top of filters and top of pump.
Would plumbing a priming pump into the return line to "pump" fuel out the injector lines to the injectors work? Will the inner workings of the Stanadyne pump allow that to happen?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom/Idaho

Ran my 1086 out of fuel once while pulling it hard.

The only way I could get it started was by cracking the fuel lines loose at the injectors. With the lines loose I cranked the motor till good fuel flow. That got the air out of the lines and it started up.

I only did 3 lines of the 6 to get it to start.

Tom You cannot pull a hydro to start the engine you will destroy the hydro. It could be that the deliever valve is stuck, if so it will never start untill you fix that.

You CANNOT pump that kind of pressure into the return fitting.

If you feel comfortable doing this, you can take the top cover off of the IP and see if the metering valve is "free".

***WARNING***

If you muck the governor linkage up in that area and the engine starts, it will run wild and you won't be able to shut it down.

Dunno Tom,

If it won't go on either, then I think ya gots larger worries than just the fuel.

Have you ever heard this tractor even run? Might need a can of compression?

I would take top off pump and very carefully make sure metering valve is free. You can't hurt anything if you don't start screwing around inside, just use a finger. A primer pump in the fuel supply line to the filter might help if tranfer pump is weak. Original 460 and 560 diesel had a primer pump in front of first fuel filter. Found out they didn't need it and it actually made it more difficult to bleed filters so they deleted it. If you are using ether for good grief sakes do not touch the glow plugs or you can have a major explosion in the intake side. Also, when using ether you would have to meter an amount very carefully continuously to keep it running until it gets fuel.

Same here with my 656d row crop gear drive, I cracked all lines to injectors and re tightened as they showed good fuel flow. Worked like a charm.
