Iam looking at a Farmall M it is a 1940.It has a 2"diameter hole to the right of the steering shaft.opposite side of air breather. Is this the wrong hood or does the hole serve some other purpose?

Starting gas tank. It was used on distillate tractors. FYI if you ever find one with the exhaust hole in the "wrong" side it is for an MD.

The hole was for a small gas tank that was used to start the tractor on and then it would be switched over to distillant fuel in the big tank which was much cheaper than gas. If the tractor still has the small gas tank then the hood is correct. If there is no small tank then it must be the wrong hood for that tractor.

Or they took the tank off when they stopped using distallate/the tank rotted out. My H is like that. I have even seen some "restored" tractors like that.

Are these hoods hard to find at all? I have a M hood out in the barn with the hole in it for the second tank, not sure if I should hang onto it, or sell it?
