looking at starting a collection and I am wondering how to verify what a tractor actually is as far as model, year, edition , (for example super or demonstrator models) Do the books only tell u the year? Thanks.

Scotty (or anybody else), where can I buy that originality guide? I have a very early 1939 Farmall H and notice it has LOTS of differences from later ones. I wonder if anybody has documented those differences and WHEN changes were made. Thanks

I was able to beat Amazon significantly on price by buying some of my books on ebay. I bought $25 books for less than $10 and picked up my Wendel book in original hardcover for less than the paperback reprint sells for today. Takes patience but i enjoy it when I get a deal.

Most of those differences are in the parts manual, also online at www.caseih.com. Once you get past 1940, most of the H changes are what I consider minor. Guy Fays letter series book is the best reference, still in print. He also has a hundred series book and a data book with more detailed specs for each model, it will not include serial breaks like the parts manual, though. Ken Updike (Bermuda Ken) has good publications for about the 1958-up models. The ones listed are the reliable publications -- be careful of other books and don't take them as gospel.

You might try the Amazon route for the book . For the level detail you're looking for on something like your A, sometimes the Parts Catalog is your best source. By looking up an assembly, for instance, you can find the serial number break for when they started casting and machining the opening in the torque tube for the starter, or for the change from the cable operated magneto ground to the single pole switch. If you then wanted to attach a date to that you could get into the IH records on the Wisconsin Historical Society's website and find the month that the tractors with those number came off the line.

It will take several references to nail a lot of things down. A good reference like Guy Fay's IH tractor data book is a good handy first reference. That breaks down a lot of the models with the usual info re years by serial number, with number breaks for significant changes (like between the Stage I and Stage II SuperH's as an example). The front of that book is a general reference section that is a gold mine for the newbie looking for clues as to just what something is, what to look for and how to interpret what they find.

Guy also put out a book with Andy Karaushaar (sp?) referred to as the Originality Guide for the Farmall letter series, which is handdy to have if that series is your interest.

Lots of online references, some more reliable than others, but it's not hard to immerse yourself in that enough to find your way around.

Forums such as this are a good place to ask about oddball finds like the vertical Delco distributors, mismatched serial numbers sometimes but not always suggesting the motor was replaced . . .
