Farmall 340 shifter boot

I just bought a 340 and I'm getting some water in the the trans case. I think its coming from where there should be a boot on the shifter (not one there). I've looked all over for a new one but seem to find ones for every other manufacture but not for a 300 series farmall. Any one out there no where I can order a new one? If not does anyone know what manufacture and or model tractor I can order one for that would fit this machine? Also I'm looking at getting a shop manual could someone recommend a specific pupblisher? I see a couple different publishers and don't know if they would be the same. Thanks in advance to all. I'm a city boy just turned country so take it easy on me LOL.

As far as I know, IH did not make boots for the shift lever. Some question as to whether the shift lever lets much in. The water can also come from condensation. I think IH recommended changing the fluid every 12 months, not many people do. www.external_link has digital copies of the original manuals. Jensales sold on this site has rather poor photocopies. Or you can buy from CaseIH, the copies are not as good as binder books. The I&T manual, which will cover several models is a good supplement.

IH did come with a boot at one time, however, they also came with a package to seal the shift lever consisting of a new bell cover with a bevel in top for an o-ring. With the installation of this package you were to drill a small hole for a breather in the shifter housing just far enough down so the bell cover would shield it from water coming from above. Originally all the IH tractors from H or M on up breathed through that shift lever, they had a groove in the bell cover. Not one of their better ideas.

Thanks for the info. The tractor did sit for a while before I got it. I'm going to be changing the fluids but wanted to fix the problem first. There seems to be a little more then what I would think could of come from condensation. But I could be wrong.

Thanks for the info I'll have to take a look at the housing in the morning and see if there's a way to tell if there's a bad oring.
