B275 PTO problem

Hi,
The pto clutch on my B275 isn"t releasing. When you push the pedal all the way to the floor you get a lot of resistance, but you can still hear the shaft spinning. If there is no load on the pto then the shift engages it just fine, but attach something to the pto and it really grinds and jerks when you try to engage it.

I have the shop manual, but I"m just not sure what to do next. Anything I should try before paying to replace the clutch?

Thanks!

Hi Shane, first step is to verify the clutch pedal adjustment. Adjust the height and free travel of clutch pedal. If you still have the same problem next step is to adjust the pressure plate fingers thru the inspection plate on the bottom of the torque tube.

See caseih.com, go parts, search 354, attachments page 6-18 and item 3 709651R1 SCREW SCREW, adjusting are the screws to adjust. As I said before on our 434 the adjusting nuts on these screws had worn a grove in the pressure plate fingers and this caused the type of PTO problems you are experiencing. Adjusting the nuts and leaving then turned a 1/4 turn so they would not rest in the old worn groove fixed our 434 PTO problems.

I believe the adjustment for the fingers is around
0.080 clearance.
If you search the archives for B414 or 434 clutch you will find the adjustment spec.

Common malady for the B-275s. I have three and it's happened with all of them. Last one I took all apart, found nothing wrong, and put it back together without changing any adjustments or parts. Then it worked great for year. Then one day I went to use it, and it was stuck again. Something that has eluded me, gets stuck in there. I many times suspected that big Bellville spring, but it has not been the culprit.

Thanks guys!

I"ll start checking all the adjustments in the morning. Hopefully I can get this working without having to have the clutch replaced.

Well it turns out one of the three fingers on the PTO pressure plate was stuck. Really stuck. Tried to dislodge it and it broke off. Guess I'm stuck having to replace/rebuild the clutch now.
