Alternator 856

Not Charging

New User
I want to change to an alternator with a built in voltage regulator rather than the original external v/r. What is the wiring diagram for the old v/r so that I can keep the red battery light and not have to add a voltmeter.

Thanks, CB

CB - Assuming the old alternator is a Delco, your new alternator should be connected like this:

- New alternator output post (BAT terminal) to heavy wire in the harness same as before.

- Wire connected to the old regulator's #4 terminal reroute and connect to the new alternator's #1 terminal.

- Jumper the new alternator's #2 terminal over the alternator BAT terminal.

Punch below and scroll down for generic diagram of a Delco externally-regulated alternator.

I would agree that the externally regulated alterntor is probably a more trouble free alternator, however, the regulator is a different story so I prefer the internally regulated units.
