Farmall A Throwout Bearing/Clutch Release Sleeve

I am currently rebuilding a 1940 A. I have the engine out at the machine shop. You can take the clutch shaft and wiggle it up and down. Is it supposed to be like that? The parts book shows a sleeve in there, I'm guessing it needs replaced. How do I know if the Throwout bearing needs replaced? Wasn't making noise and seemed to work ok prior to teardown.

Thanks
Mike

Feel the bearing as you spin it. Should spin very smooth with no rough spots.
Most just put in a new one while the tractor is apart.

The clutch shaft fits into a pilot bearing in the flywheel when the engine is installed. That is what keeps the shaft from flopping up and down. Throwout bearings (clutch release) are not expensive. You'll never have a better opportunity to replace it.

I looked at the tractor closer tonight. The sleeve that is worn is the one that stays stationary that the throw out bearing rides on. The inside diameter of the sleeve is worn on the top side. The throw out bearing doesn"t turn rough or feel funny when turning it so I"m going to leave it in. I"m just concerned about that sleeve.

Thanks
Mike
