706 torque question

have a question about my 706 torque... when its cold it works good, but once its warmed up, if you go from low back to high, its slow to go back to high. Sometimes it won"t return at all, and usually when the lever is in the high position, and the tractor is still in low driving, it will freewheel forward... but not freewheel in low. When its cold, the t/a works perfectly. The oil is kinda milky, im not sure about the filter... any ideas?

Get trhat milky oil out immedatly and change the filter too! With anIH,they need good, clean oil flow to the MCV.if that doesnt help, have a professional check MCV pressures

I see the dipstick on the platform floor of the 706, is there a dipstick for the center section where the torque is? Is there more than one filter on it? Thank you!

There's one dipstick. Two if you count the one sitting in the seat! :)

The transmission and TA share oil.

There is only one hydraulic filter.

You would do well to get yourself a manual. It shows where all the fill/drain points are, where the filters are, and how much oil you need. Not just for the transmission but for the whole tractor.

Unfortunately, changing the oil won't fix your problem. If it was caused by bad oil or a plugged filter, and you ran it that way until problems started appearing, the damage has been done.

What is the steering like? If you have loss of steering assist, especially at idle, you have a weak MCV pump or oil leaks. Restricted filter or air leaks will cause pump noise from cavitation.

If the steering is OK look for problems in the MCV assembly or leaks in the TA assembly.

Funny you should ask... So there's no loss of steering ability, but it you turn the tires all the way to the right or left and apply pressure, where you can hear the hydraulics working hard (because the tires can't turn anymore)it will go from hi speed to t/a speed. IT does this without moving the t/a handle....

Since the steering is good the first thing I would check is the power brake valve. There is an orifice under the inlet line fitting to restrict the oil flow to one GPM. The 706 uses an open center brake valve so if that orifice comes out it can dump too much oil through the valve and cause loss of pressure in the TA system. Try shifting the TA while applying the brakes. If that improves the shifting the orifice may have come out. Remove the line and fitting to get access to the orifice.

Problems in the MCV assembly may be a blown gasket, broken spring on the pressure regulator valve, or a stuck regulator valve. The TA may also have too much leakage, usually worn sealing rings and bushing on the input shaft.

With the open center power brake valve you only have two GPM available to the TA. Later tractors used a closed center valve so they have three GPM available.
