3 Gallons of Oil in Crank Case of my SA

Last year my wife purchased a surprise birthday present for me, a super a. I've been too busy to work with it until recently. Today i went to change the oil. My first indication i have problems is that when i pulled the drain plug on the filter canister it was dry . Then when i pulled the drain plug on the pan, instead of the anticipated 5 qts- i was surprised to find +/- 3 gallons of oil. There does not appear to be any water or anti-freeze in it.

As a novice, my suspicion is that the oil pump is shot and the previous owner just filled the crank case to keep it running.

My question is am i headed in the right direction or is there something else i'm missing?

Seecond the hydraulic pump. There is a rebuild kit with instructionsavailable from Case/IH. Check the pump shaft where the seal rides, if it is scored the new seal will leak. You will need a speedi-sleeve to put on the shaft. These can be purchased at NAPA.

Perfectly normal on the oil filter. The oil filter on your tractor is a bypass style filter. It is designed to have a metered amount of oil delivered to it through the center bolt, pass through the filter, and then drain back to the crankcase. If your filter canister still has much oil in it after the engine not running for a few minutes, you probably have a restricted filter drain.

I have to go with the hydraulic pump too. Here's
a part's breakdown. Item No4 probably has worn a groove on the shaft of item No11. You may need a speedi-sleeve to cover the worn area. Hal

I would not get into a hurry to tear into it. Just fill it with the proper amount of oil and run it and see what happens. Maybe the PO just kept adding oil and did not understand what the upper petcock was for.

Be sure to check the touch-control (hydraulic fluid level, too. There is a large plug on the left side below the gas tank. Fluid should be within 1/2" of the hole. You may need a funnel with a hose to fill it. Recommend Hy-Tran fluid from a Case/IH dealer, but if not available be sure it is hy-tran compatable.
