'47 H purchase, rebuild

The '47 H I purchased is in the shop; rebuilt carb, ignition, fluids and filters. Checked timing, governor slotted in carb, spark, plenty of gas to carb; a bit baffled as to why she will not start. After chocking a bit of white smoke comes from the exhaust. Something new that I need to learn for my children's sake. The old man didn't want to die, because he never stopped learning. What could we be missing? I figured she would start right up. Everyone's knowledge is put to good use. Thanks for the help!!!!

I would re-check that you timed the spark to #1 at TDC just following compression (air pushing your thumb out of the spark plug hole).
Align the crank pulley mark ( " ) so the pointer is between the double mark.

She should still pop or give me some kind of hope I'm headed in the right direction. we tested the spark timing by turning her over by hand; manual states idle to be TDC.

Where in Upstate??? New York?
I am gonna say that you have a timing issue. Did you follow the timing directions in the I$T manual to the tee? If you did that and nothin", then you need to make sure your wires are hooked to the correct cylinder and that your didtributer is in correctly. If one of those issues doesn"t get ya goinm then it could be alot of things.
Got a Super M once that was runnin on 3 cylinders (he hayed that season with it that way)
got it home and turned the distributer 180 degrees the way it should be and hooked the wires up in the proper firing order and nothing...put it back and it still ran on 3????
Research revealed that the year before the crank had broken...went and got a used crank and popped it in, ran well enough for him on 3 so he used it. When I tore it down finally...I did reuse the used crank he had put in it (after machine work) but this time I got the timing gear on the end of the crank alligned correctly and aways she goes!

As others have stated, try switching the plug wires. Swap them to opposite sides of the cap. Sometimes, these get timed 180 degrees off. There is beautiful spark but at the wrong time in the cycle. If swapping the wires works, you can retime the ignition or just leave it that way until the next tune-up.

Endicott here...6 mi West of Binghamton on 17/86...warm there too?
Good luck with the H let us know!

Thanks for the info. Apparently the coil was not quite hot enough. Replaced and she purrs like a kitten; soft and smooth. My advice is always replace every component when do the job, take nothing for granted; much cheaper in the long run. Pete76NY, nice area of the State, my daughter goes to Elmira College so I pass through that area numerous times during the year. My son is going to start trimming fence rows, pond banks, new seeding and creek banks. Oh yeah she came with a belly sickle; I"m pretty tickled!!!!!
