544rc solenoid fuel shut-off valve

I just installed a new fuel shut-off solenoid in my 544rc and it is running very rich. There is no adjustment screw on this model. My carb. is a Marvel-Schebler and was told this was the correct fuel solenoid. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would compare the old with the new. There may be a serial number break that allows for two different parts. (Just guessing) If the new solenoid is not seated as deep as the old it might allow more fuel to pass. It could also have had a chunk of crud under the needle and seat (float Valve) or a sinking float.
Was it able to run with the old solenoid? if so what was wrong with it. Jim

Well the solenoid valve only shuts of the fuel after you turn the key off. It shouldnt make any difference how it runs when its running. Sounds like it a little out of time.

Check the distributor cam for wear in its bushings (side to side/Up and down, not in and out)
if any play can be felt, or measured, it must be less than .001" or timing will be very erratic, leading to the described running problems. The points need to be set to .020"
Good luck. Jim

The reason i'm thinking the fuel solenoid is that the wire to the solenoid was shorting out on the solenoid cassing and I saw smoke from that area.
I changed out the points, rotor, condensor, dist. cap, plugs, wires, and coil, with no change in performance.
I removed the air intake to the carb looking for excess gas and found it dry. Does that answer the needle and float theory?
Will check later, gotta feed critters.

Did you take the main jet out of the old solenoid and install in the new one, or did it come with a jet in it, usually they do not and you have to use the old one. Marvel Schebler carbs solenoids are made that way, shut offs for zenith and IH carbs do not have a jet in shutoff as they are in the carb on those models.

Thanks Pete, that was the ticket. I thought the jet would come in the new one, so i took it from the old one and it purrrrs real nice. Thanks for this YT forum, what a resource.
