300u no steering

My 300u ran like a champ yesterday mowing. Until. Went to load on trailer and the steering wheel went into freewheeling mode. This is a NON ps unit. I am wading into it this morning and cant seem to get the steering shaft out of the box. Does it even come out of the top? I am hoping for a easy and quick fix for now. Any and all suggestions are encouraged. Long term may involve adding power steering but for now just need it to steer.
 
I think the two halves of the box and asociated shafts have to come apart before the steering wheel shaft comes out. Are both wheels still connected and in sync? If so maybe your trouble is the pin that rides the worm gear. Exploded view is available in the parts section of www.caseih.com.
 
Update. Took the side cover off the steering box and was able to get at retainer ring to remove shaft. The knob on the lead sector shaft is worn away to nothing. So. Now looking for fixes. Salvage yard box if possible. Or jackson power steering kit. Any one know expected price of either?

I've read where someone made, or had a machine shop make, a replacement for that worn piece.
