L terminal on voltage regulator

I'm trying to track down the reason for my '40 H not charging and noticed that the "L" terminal on the voltage regulator does not have a wire connected to it.

What does the "L" terminal do / control ?

Thanks

Greg

Lights.
Here is a wiring diagram for the newer 3 position light switch using a voltage regulator.

Some say with the original 4 position switch and a voltage regulator nothing will be hooked to the L position.

Newer 3 position switch wiring with a voltage regulator.

I just had the same problem. If you have a Mag then you don"t need the L terminal,as long as there is a wire going from the ammeter to the switch.I"ll try to post mine before I fixed it but you"ll see that I have a short wire that feeds the switch under the dash so I don"t need the L hook up.If you have a distributor you do.
