Installing Belt pulley on Super C

Hello. I want to install a belt pulley on my Farmall Super C. My question is there are three metal shims that need to be installed. Do you also use a gasket. Does these metal shims act as a gasket? Will it leak with just the shims. Please help me out you all. THANKS.
 
The shims are used to set the gear backlash, use only enough shims to get a little, I'm not sure what they recommend. I would use the gasket and some gasket sealer.
