Super C starting Problems

We have a super C with electronic ignition. The tractor will crank, but not fire until you let off the starter. While cranking, the battery reads 4.5 volts. Is this too low to fire the electronic ignition? Or maybe with the low voltage does that mean we need a starter rebuild?

Any suggestions?

You probably need to have your battery load tested to see if it has a weak cell. Put the battery on a charger overnight and use a hydrometer to check the specific gravity in each cell and compare readings. Should be in the 1.260 range. If you have another battery that's fully charged you could swap battery's. I think your battery voltage is too low for the tractor's ignition. Hal

Check all battery connections--especially ground connection. That ground cable that came on the tractor is a big joke. Try using a longer battery cable & ground it to a convenient frame bolt near the starter. Then see what the voltage reads while cranking. Starter could have dry bushings--pulling down.

The Super C starter most likely has no center bearing and when the end bushing wear the armature contacts the pole shoes making for a slugish starter. Have put center bearing in many and it greatly reduces the current draw therefore higher cranking voltage. No substitue for good batt and cables of course but when you are sure they are good it gives you someplace else to look.

I ran across the exact same thing on an H years ago. It would not start no matter how well the starter spun it. If you pulled it, it would start within a couple of feet. Turned out to be a defective ignition condenser.
