doug, i might be wrong, but that gray wire, is it hooked to that terminal that has a "L"on it?

i might be wrong but if it does, i think that might be for the lights?

just a thought.

Just a thought, and it is a disturbing one. I can't tell from your pics entirely as I'm not sure how the different terminals up at the generator a labeled, but the smoke may be just temporary and absolutely normal. Your light switch is the 4-position (Low charge), H(igh charge), D(im), B(right). If teh tractor has been sitting around gathering dust, it's entirely possible that the smoke is not from a wiring problem, but from the fact that the two resistors on the back of the switch -- the flat one at the bottom where the grey wire hooks up that controls the charge rate (L/H) or the double ended round one that shares a stud with the balck wire with the blue insulator on it which control the D/B fucntion for the lights -- are getting heated up for the first time in a long time, and the dust is burning off of them as they heat up. Had that experience. IF that is the case, the smoke shall pass, just detrmine that that is infact the issue, and then run it on low charge for a while and then on dim lights until all the crud is burned away.

What is your ammeter showing?

Scott thanks I'll try again, but right off the bat the meter wasn't working. Also that resistor type thing is a little buggered up on the bottom so I'll try changing that too.

Did you install a REGULATOR or a CUTOUT?

If you have the 4-position switch, you should have installed the CUTOUT.

If you have the 3-position switch, you should have installed the REGULATOR.

You can install a regulator with the 4-position switch but the wiring will be different.

I have a 4 position switch,I'm not sure about a cutout.Whats it look like or where does it go?Thanks

Here"s a link to my 3-position switch wiring diagram.

Mkirsch is correct, so here"s how to solve it. Then you move the third brush in the generator for ideal charging output.
