766 vs. 1066

I am trying to understand the difference between a 766 and 1066 fender tractor besides the obvious engine/hp difference. I'm looking for things like size, weight, parts availability, general opinions. I have always liked the 1066s, but really only need the hp and weight of a 766.

Well thats about it hp. The 1066 is built heaver, axles, final drives, hitch to handle biger loads. I think the 766 is about equal to the 756 and 706. The way they operate is identical as most of the 06,(except the shifter on the 06's) 56 series thru the 66 series do. Most 766's has 34" rubber on the back and 1066's has 38's. I think the 1066 has a cat. 3 3pt. Parts availabilty should not be a problem with eather one. Personaly I like the looks of them all.

In appearance, they all look the same. Sheet metal is interchangable, except the hood where the exhaust goes. The 766 has a cat. II hitch but the 1066 has a cat. III because of the additional horsepower. The 766 and 966 have smaller axles (3-1/4")and a 12" clutch compared to a 14" on the 1066 and up. The 766 came as gas or diesel while all the rest were diesel only. The 766 diesel has a D360 engine where all the rest have the 400 series engine. But the frame is also drilled for the 400 series engine so upgrade is possible. The D360 engine length is shorter so it has a fan spacer to get the fan closer to the radiator like the 400 series engines. I have seen 766 with 34" and others with 38" rear tires. My 766 has 18.4-34 rears. My 766 has no fluid in the rears and no weights on it and weighed 9380 last week. I am sure there are more differences.

Comparing a 766 with a 966 or 1066 prices, it is very close when condition is the same. A lot of people like the 766 I guess.

Where are you located? (What state) Sometimes, the larger tractors will be beat to death depending on where they came from. The 766 with it's lower horsepower on the same transmission as the 966 might be in better overall condition.

I think other than the engine, clutch, and 3 pt, they are identical. The 1066 has 3 1/4 inch axles like all the 06/56 series tractors. The 1466 had 3 3/8 inch axles I think, with slightly wider bull and pinion gears. The 15's had larger axles yet with planetary final drives. I think the 1086 had the 3 3/8 inch axles like the 14's did.

The 966 had the D414, the 1066 DT414, and 14 and 15's had the DT436.
