Speedi-Sleeve on a Splined PTO Shaft?

Hi –

Has anyone successfully installed a Speedi-Sleeve at the rear oil seal location on a splined PTO output shaft?

The manufacturer’s web site is clear as mud. I can’t tell if they’re saying not to leave the sleeve over splines or a keyway (obvious), or if they’re saying I can’t even slide the sleeve over/past splines and keyways along the way to its final position.

Any ideas/experiences/advice?

Thanks in advance.

Clean and measure the shaft. If it is at all bigger than the seal location, it will not work from that end. Use at least a good caliper, and measure carefully. Some shafts are put together fron the inside out, and need to be taken apart to repair. We might be more helpful if we knew what it was on. Jim

Hi, Jim.

This is on a 350 Utility (and I know you're familiar with Utes!).

My measurements indicate diameters of 1.375 inches at the seal location (not the groove) and 1.370 at the splines. I could probably knock a little more off the splines just by cleaning some surface rust, so I think I'm OK there.

My current thought is that if I can get just the right size, I should be able to slip it over the splines and get an acceptable fit. Even if the splines cause some distortion in the sleeve (within reason), the full diameter of the final position should help straighten it back out -- enough to seal, at least, and better than the present groove. If it doesn't work I will have learned something and paid $20 for the lesson, so it's not the end of the world.

Your thoughts?

Polish the shaft right to the seal with 400 grit (round and round). It should slide on till the shaft gets fatter. Use a tube with the correct diameter as a driver! Jim
