Sleeve retainer

I have a question about a loose sleeve in a farmall super M. Long story short, I should have just got new gaskets and rings for the tractor. Too late now!

#2 sleeve is loose, original one was not loose but pulled out very easy. Now the new one moves with the piston. What should I do? I am not getting a custom sleeve made! Do I smear the goop (Loctite or permatex or JB weld) along the entire sleeve or a little around the top portion?

Then I hear stories about the plastic (permatex or loctite) having cooling issues? This is a farm tractor not a show tractor or a pulling tractor!

Thanks!

Well here i am really fussy as to sleeve fit as over the years i have seen one to many sleeves sucked down around the crank . Myself i would have that hole bored and a repair sleeve pressed in then bored to make for a press fit of the new sleeve . I do not get my jollys off redoing a job the second time around . You see this problem more on the later engines then on the older 4 cylinders . On the newer engines they have bore classifications as to what sleeve you need where and after market kits do not address this as they only offer one size sleeve and one size does not fit all. It is wise to Mic. all holes before ordering parts .

Loctite makes a high temp sleeve retainer, 621?? I think. Go to their online catalog. Take your time with it and don't use the catalyst, it sets up faster than you'll like. This stuff is PERMANENT so make sure you want to glue it. I assume their is some interference between sleeve and bore, in other words no lateral play?

i was thinking that when the tractor was up to operating temp the sleeve should expand it self to fit snugger in the block bore.if you stuck your fist in the sleeve and try to pull it up with resistance it should be ok on these old engines. remember new rings and new honed cyl. will be snug till its worn in. but if you can just pull it out with 2 fingers thats not good either. i guess you have to make a desition for your self when not planing on spending fistfulls of money.i am not in agreement of glueing them either.if it was mine i would just use a bit on the btm.of sleeve and let the expansion do its thing at the top where the fire is.

It has resistance. You have to push in pretty good then pull some to get it out. So it is not loose and flopping around!

Loctite ® Sleeve Retainer 640™ is a high temperature anaerobic adhesive that secures slip and press fit assemblies. Adds up to 3,000 psi holding power. Restores fit to worn or out-of-tolerance assemblies. Prevents surface corrosion. Works to 400 °F.

The loctite or the old-timer method of iodineing them in will PROBABLY work on a low rpm engine in A SM. I had a sleeve in my Super H a bit looser than I like so I iodined it and its still running fine after a few hundred hours. But the Vet,s way is the correct, properer and safest way.

I just went through the same thing on my H. I bought a product called SLEEVE RETAINER made by Permatex. The number is PX#64000. I bought it at O'reilly auto parts. 6.00 for the tube. They had to order it but they had it the next day.

he said he was not getting a custom sleeve made! trying to give the most sensible info. for what there is to work with, with actual hands on experience in this situation, without him having a wreck in the end.still not sold on glue, that is for worn out surfaces.

(quoted from post at 10:40:10 03/15/10) he said he was not getting a custom sleeve made!

Well, if it comes down to a custom sleeve, or a better-than-50% chance of sucking the loose sleeve down into the crankcase...
