MW Hand Clutch

Can a M&W hand clutch hold 60hp or alittle more out of a Super MD without slipping? A friend had one in a MH 44 and it slipped bad when he tried pulling it on a stone boat or trying to pull a 3 bottom plow even in first gear. Im thinking about putting in a hand clutch in my Super MD but dont want to have problems with it slipping. I would be using to do a little plowing and pulling.

Thanks for the help

Im actually at 59hp right now, pump turned up and
over sized pitons 4 1/8" in it now. Im hoping
eventually for 70hp. A friend of mine got 73hp on
the dyno with his 450 Diesel. Im shooting for that,
just playing around...

So you lied! I will let you round up.

I thought you couldn't turn the pump up on these tractors? I read on yt that it wouldn't even make it half wad down the track.

IIWY there would be a turbo on that thing shortly! We pull those Keystone turbo tractors in N Illinois and they are sweeeeet.

Im not sure about the hand clutch, but 60 horse outta that MD is impressive. I have a super M with 90 horse on the dyno while holding 540 pto rpm. Keystone turbos are amazing, but i have also done a few other things aswell.

Well if you already have the clutch set up it would just cost some time to give it a try and remove it if things didn't work out. Not that big a deal on a SM. No deck lid, or pto, bull gear or axles need moved or removed on a SM to install or remove one.
Sometimes you can help the clutches hold if worn enough or fiber plates are made a little thiner, by adding another fiber and steel plate to the pack. You do know you end up with a band brake on the clutch side and a disk brake on the other side?

It wasnt really to hard to get the hp up alittle, the biggest problem was setting the timing, cover off, cover on, cover off, cover on, repeat 10 times.... The pump and injectors were rebuilt and im looking at swapping pump guts around to get me another 10 or so. I was just thinking about a hand clutch because im going to be doing some hay this summer and was thinking that the SMD would be a nice baling tractor. If i had some form of 'live' pto.

thanks guys as always

The owner's manual for the M&W clutches recommends that no heavy pulling be done with an M&W clutch equipped tractor. I would be hesitant to run that much HP through the clutch, especially when plowing or pulling. Very few new parts are available and a limited supply of good used.

I deal in M&W hand clutches and parts and I have only come across one clutch for the Super M/MD. M clutches are pretty common, but in my experience the Super M/MD clutches are harder to find and the major components are different than the M/MD clutch.

Kirk,

thanks very much for the info, looks like the hand
clutch is out of the question for what im going to
be doing with it, dont want to spend big money to
just burn it out.

thanks again

Andrew

I was just going to ask where you found a SM M&W hand clutch. Sounds like you were just kicking the idea around.

Like Kirk said they seem pretty rare. I've been keeping my eyes open for one for a while, they just don't seem to turn up.
