Starting procedure

I read through the owners manual for the starting procedure for a Farmall H and M. It says to give it 1/3 throttle. What is the purpose of this? Does it give optimal timing or air / fuel ratio? I think mine start faster at 3/4 throttle.

Just my opinion. I would say they picked 1/3 throttle because a cold engine may not want to idle, and they didn't want the engine RPM to high until the oil circulated and warmed a little. To slow at start up would add to oil dillution also.

That is a common sense number. As Dave implied you want it to start and run, but you don't want the RPM so high that it will damage the engine. I'm not going to start one at 3/4 throttle, easier to start or not.

I agree with posters below, and also , if starting on closed throttle you would be on the idle circuit which is pretty much a warm engine adjusted speed and mixture. Part throttle gives you some air to work with. One of the things I never liked on some diesel engines with the inline bosch inj pump is that they have a automatic start circuit so they rev up pretty high when they start. I much prefer to run the throttle myself to control start. I always said if I owned one of them I would eliminate that feature.

Once that engine fires right off i bring it right down to low idle or a couple notches up from low idle if it wont stay running, Have seen the effects of improper warm up. And i can only imagine what would happen to a tractor of this age

I start at 1/3 and let it warm up at 1/3. I'd worry that idling all the way down might result in oil starvation due to inadequate oil pressure coupled with cold lubricant.

Pretty much in agreement, Just fast enough to make sure the pump is working. As we know high speed run up is what kills most engines way before their time.

These are not cars. The governor will leave throttle all the way open until it reaches set speed and closes it off, but it has limitations when used near idle. That is why 1/3 is used, it makes for a decent working number in a wide variety of situations.
