450 will not restart after it is warmed up

Tractor belongs to my neighbor. I think it is an electrical problem. The battery is to low to start the tractor and I think the battery is not being charged correctly by the generator. We talked about polarizing the regulator and tightening the belt.

He thinks it is a gas issue. I told him about draining a bucket of gas out of the carb. drain hole to verify that there isn't an obstruction.

Any other ideas would be appreciated
Thank you

Did you mistreat it when you had it running?
Nothing likes to be mistreated..

Sounds like the intake is leaking air, choke it real good.

Sounds like your coil or condensor is going dead. It is a classic bad coil sign when you can start the tractor when cold yet after awhile it stalls or will not restart. What you need to do is when it will not start pull a plug and check for spark. If you see none or a very fait/orange/yellow spark then the coil is bad. If you have anouther coil off anouther tractor or one lying around then its easy to try it. Only takes a few seconds to change one out.

If your battery is DEAD there is not enough juice to make a spark, so it dies.
all the other replies are pertinent, but they are all moot points if you have no juice

I would say it leads to a bad coil if starts well cold, give it a good tune up.replace the coil, condensor and plugs that should do the trick, and clean and regap the points.

I mention the bad coil to him, but this will happen when he turns it off and then tries to restart it. He said that sometimes he has to wait for an hour to get it to start again.

I thought that if he is turning it off, then the coil should not not have broken down to the point of preventing it from restarting. ?????

He has been useing a screw driver to short out one leg of the V.R. to get it to charge, which is why I believe it is an electrical problem.

Thank you everyone

When the engine quits running pull the coil wire out of the distributor's cap and hold it near a good ground. You will need a helper. Should have a hot blue spark. Yuo need to do this asap before the coil or engine cools. If there's very weak or no spark replace the coil. You also need a fully charged battery to supply a constant supply of battery voltage to the ignition. If you still have hot fire when it quits you probably have a fuel problem.

Pull the gas line at the carb and see if there's a full stream of gas from the tank. Hold a clean container to catch the gas. If that looks ok and you don't have just a trickle remove the tube fitting at the carb and look for a screen behind the fitting could be plugged. Hal

If you can arrange it, be ready to tow-start his tractor after he shuts it down and it won't start. If it will tow start, that points to a weak battery; the starter is drawing the battery down and the spark is too weak to fire.

Another idea: Just because it doesn't die doesn't mean the coil still isn't bad. The spark may be strong enough to keep the engine running, but with the added load of the starter (see above), the hot flakey coil may not be able to produce enough spark to start the engine.

The fact that the tractor starts and he can use it normally for an extended period of time says that it is NOT a fuel problem.
