H heater hose tee.

I was hooking up a block heater to my 1948 H and I went to look at how it was done on what used to be my grandpas 1940 H and it tees into the lower rad hose and pumps warm coolant into the block just above were the carb is. My question is the 1940 H's tee fitting on the lower rad hose has a 5/8 nipple coming out of the rubber hose. Almost looks like it was made that way. It could have been epoxyed but it has been on there that I can remeber since 1980 and has never leaked, would think an epoxy would come unglued after years and years of hott and cold. All I can find is a metal tee fitting that you cut the rad hose and hose clamp it in between. Just was wondering if anyone has ever seen for sale a lower rad hose that has a 5/8 nipple coming out of it.

They used them on a lot of old cars too. What they are is a piece of steel tubing,, or brass, with a curved piece on one end, then threaded , with a curved piece that you put on and tighten down with a nut. after you cut a hole in the hose and put the thing thru. You can find them in old car parts catalogues, I think that Drakes and probably Carpenter's has them.
 
They used to make "tee" adapters that you could install in a radiator hose.

They were a hose barb with straight threads and a couple of washers stamped to conform to the hose.

You made a hole in the hose, inserted the threaded adapter, then installed the nut and snugged it up.

I can't recall seeing them at parts stores for MANY years and a quick internet search didn't turn anything up, but they're probably out there SOMEWHERE!

The rubber portion of that lower radiator hose is only about 3 inches long? And the gap that the rubber hose covers is only about 1 inch to maybe 1 1/2 inches? I really don't see how it is possible to install any kind of a tee fitting in there. Maybe that's why you can't find one.

There are other ways of installing a heater on your H. Maybe someone can find a picture?
 
On my H, I took out the block drain plug, installed a nipple (3/8" if I remember right), & put a short hose to the bottom of the tank heater. Then I took out the heat guage bulb, installed a short nipple & "T", put the heat guage bulb in the straight side of the "T" and connected the top hose from the tank heater to a short nipple in the bottom of the "T". Heat guage reads a little low, but works OK. Always thought of taking the plug out of the stat housing & plumbing it into there, but don't know if that would work as good. Have to plug it in at noon, -7 here now with a 20 MPH wind and about 8" of new snow on top of the 20" we got during Christmas. Don't know where I'm going to pile it from the drive tonight. Its a solid rubber hose from pump to rad. Not like some that have a piece of rubber hose on one end then metal and then rubber hose on the other end. I have a metal tee like in the pic below that I could install on the 48 H but like the set-up on my 40 H with the nipple coming out of the rubbuer hose.
 
Your lower hose is from a different vehicle. No issue, it is just not original. Using it for the lower heater port will work. Most use the drain plug behind the carb area for the lower hose. JimN
